For the last summer fun edition of ITG I'm plagiarizing myself and resharing what I think are some of the best links from the past year. I personally found it useful to have a look back at previous editions of the newsletter, and I sincerely hope you do too.

1. What does it take to become a carbon neutral company—and then to go beyond net zero emissions?

This article breaks down the journey that Stripe started in 2017, and comes with a handy worksheet for you to use with your own company.They then followed up their commitment to offsetting with a further commitment in 2019 to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. And a few months ago they announced their first negative emissions purchases, stating:

"Our goal is not only to remove carbon from the atmosphere, but to become an early member of an ecosystem of funders and founders who will invent ways to solve the world’s largest collective problem."

They've also published a collection of source materials for others to use when considering negative emissions purchasing.

2. I've had the book Doughnut Economics by 'renegade economist' Kate Raworth on my never-ending reading list for a while now. 📖

If you haven't read it yet either, the author's TED talk is an excellent introduction to her ideas. And while—of course—she makes the case for a new economic system that works within our planet's limits and helps people to thrive, what really struck me was how well suited solo business owners and startup founders are to leading this new economy:  

"200 years of corporate control of intellectual property is being upended by the bottom-up, open-source, peer-to-peer knowledge commons. And corporations that still pursue maximum rate of return for their shareholders, well they suddenly look rather out of date next to social enterprises that are designed to generate multiple forms of value and share it with those throughout their networks."

Hell yeah!

3. B1G1 is an interesting option for entrepreneurs who don't create a direct social or environmental impact through their normal business operations but still want to make a difference in those everyday activities.

As a B1G1 member, you can choose from over 500 vetted causes and tie your contributions to a business action. So for every book you sell, you provide textbooks for a student in Cambodia. Or for every income tax return you file for a client, you fund a day of bookkeeping training for a female entrepreneur in Zambia.

You get the idea. There are hundreds of ways to give through B1G1 and they'll help you get started with a customized giving plan.

4. If you're a podcast addict like me I highly recommend That's Not How That Works, a podcast that'll get you thinking deeply about diversity, inclusion and equity in your personal and professional communities.

Co-hosts Trudi Lebron and Louiza "Weeze" Doran are JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) masters and their passion for creating a just and equitable society will  inspire you to do better.

5. Whether your business is already working on the Sustainable Development Goals or you’re wanting to get started, check out the SDG Action Manager. Developed by B Lab and the UN Global Compact, this free tool will help you understand the impact you’re currently making, set goals, develop a plan of action, and track your progress. 📊 

+6. The Conscious Style Guide is an excellent resource with articles and style guides to help us use language inclusively. As founder Karen Yin puts it, “We study words so that they can become tools instead of unwitting weapons.” 🔧

+7. Charitable giving is the cornerstone of many a business impact strategy. One way to include it in yours is by joining 1% For The Planet, a global network that connects businesses and individuals with environmental nonprofits.

Business members donate to vetted nonprofits by giving the equivalent of 1% of their sales through a combo of monetary, in-kind and approved promotional expenses.

You choose what nonprofits you want to partner with, and donate directly to them. You can search their nonprofit directory here to see who it's possible to donate to, but 1% For The Planet account managers can also recommend suitable partners based on your business and your impact goals.

+8. How do you make sure your content resonates with your audience?

“Imagine what a differentiator it would be if your content incorporated voices from people who haven’t seen their faces represented or been heard in your industry.”

There are all sorts of very good reasons to value diversity and inclusion, and as a bonus, doing so can increase the effectiveness of your content marketing. 

Ann Gynn breaks down how to create diverse and inclusive content marketing, such as making sure your audience personas reflect what your audience truly cares about and looking beyond the words when creating inclusive content. 🌍

+9. “We just needed to select web hosts and service providers with a commitment to using renewable energy. If only it were that easy!”

I love this article by Tom Greenwood, managing director at Wholegrain Digital. Tom writes about how they’ve applied the Sustainable Web Manifesto’s principles—clean, efficient, open, honest, resilient and regenerative—to how they run their whole business. He’s proud of what Wholegrain has accomplished, and he doesn’t shy away from sharing the challenges they’ve encountered. ⭐

+10. SheEO is a global community of women and non-binary entrepreneurs working to solve some of the biggest problems we face right now, or as they put it, “working on the World's To-Do List.”

Members (called Activators) pool their money together to offer zero-interest loans to other entrepreneurs (called Ventures). Loans are paid back over five years and then loaned out again. But it’s about more than the money. Ventures also receive coaching for one year, as well as access to the community of Activators.

Activators support each other and Ventures through their network, expertise, buying power and other resources. SheEO gives women and non-binary entrepreneurs an opportunity to give and get support, while creating a better world with their business, all in one community. I kinda love it. 😍
